Thorvaldson Breaks State Course Record In Wyoming

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Rawlins sophomore Sydney Thorvaldson broke Anna Gibson's 2-year-old Wyoming state championship record at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital grounds in Sheridan on Saturday.

Thorvaldson, US#15 in the latest DyeStat rankings, covered the 5,000-meter course in 17:34.68 to win the Class 3A race by 86 seconds. Gibson, who runs for Brown University, ran 17:35.20 to win the Class 4A title in 2016.

Evanston Senior won its first Class 4A boys title with 39 points and ended Laramie's six-year streak of victories.

Senior Weston Wiley won the race for Evanston in 16:03.74 and his four scoring teammates all finished in the top 16 of the race. Laramie was third with 99 points.

RESULTS

Evanston, located in the far southwest corner of the state, finished third in 2017.

Claudia Miller of Cheyenne Central won the 4A girls race in 18:35.15, improving from fourth last year.

Natrona Country put four in the top 15 and scored 70 points to win the girls title. Cheyenne Central (91), Evanston Senior (94) and Laramie (99) were all in the hunt.

The Jackson girls went 4-6-8-10-17 on the way to capturing the 3A girls title.

Star Valley sophomore Peter Visser ran 15:56.21 to win the 3A boys title. Defending champion Asefa Wetzel, also from Star Valley, was fourth.

Jackson, led by the 2-3 finish of Mac Staryk and Wyatt Sullivan, dethroned Star Valley, 42-54.

In the small-school 2A races, there were a couple of tight team battles. Saratoga edged Wyoming Indian, 69-70, as junior Jaron Herring won in 17:29.77 for Saratoga. Thermopolis narrowly beat Wyoming Indian on the girls side, 32-36, as the two schools put a combined six runners in the top nine. Moorcroft's Hailey Jones won the race in 19:46.19.

After a six-year run in Sheridan, the state meet will move to Star Valley High in Afton next year.
